Recently, a group of students, some school personnel and a few parents meet with Lee Lonzo and Mitch to learn about a program called Champions Together. Champions Together is a collaborative partnership between the Indiana High School Athletic Association and Special Olympics Indiana that promotes servant leadership among student athletes while changing their lives as well as the lives of those with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics International is supporting Champions Together as a model program to activate schools through “Project Unify” which also has the endorsement of the National Federation of High Schools.
Following this meeting, we have held additional meetings with students as well as with Jeff Mohler, President/CEO of Special Olympics Indiana who came and talked about a program within Champions Together called Unified Track. It is our intent with the initiation of a Champions Together program at Norwell High School and Middle School to encourage our students to get involved in making a difference in the lives of others, to be servant leaders.
On Wednesday, March 20th Craig Tornquist was on hand to present about the program. We are excited about this opportunity to involve our students in a program that we feel will be very beneficial to all involved.
