Title I Services

 Northern Wells Community School’s Title I program begins by providing supplemental services, SSI (Systematic Supplemental Instruction), in kindergarten through grade 5. This program provides students most in need (based on Clay's Observation Survey, Oral Language testing, Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessments, and state and local testing) with additional literacy instruction 4-5 days each week. Trained Reading Recovery teachers or literacy support specialists and paraprofessionals provide this instruction. Title I services provide small group remediation during a 30 minute daily intervention block working with students in grades K-5. In addition, students identified most at need are provided additional instruction by a literacy support specialist or paraprofessional through pushing into the classroom or pulling individual students out for a tier 3, one-on-one instructional time. Besides providing direct student support, a literacy coach provides support and coaching to teachers and literacy support specialists and paraprofessionals to help them more effectively meet the needs of their Title I students. The Title I director monitors these services as well as classroom instruction to ensure that all Title I students are fully participating in classroom literacy instruction in addition to the supplemental support they are receiving. Parents are continually involved in these programs through parent surveys, parent meetings, and / or through parent participation during a tutoring session with his / her child. These interactions educate parents on the strategies and philosophies used in our programs. This enables them to more effectively support their children at home.
